Minnesota Alumnus Retires from the Navy
Jay D. Bottelson, Minnesota ’85, recognized for career of service
The United States Navy honored Jay D. Bottelson in a retirement ceremony at the Hall of Heroes at The Pentagon, Washington, DC, on January 30. Phil Decker, Minnesota ’86, also attended, as did his wife Mari and two children, Gerik and Amara. Rear Admiral John E. Roberti presided.

Bottelson is a 1985 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor of Individualized Studies degree in Russian, Naval Science, and Physics. There, he was commissioned through the Navy ROTC program at a ceremony Decker also attended. Bottelson attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College from 2000 to 2001, and earned a Masters in Military Studies. He also earned a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 2010.

During his career, he served as an officer aboard the USS Carl Vinson, USS Belknap, USS Flatley, and the USS Lake Champlain, which were home ported in California, Italy, Mississippi, and California respectively. Bottelson’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Now retired from the Navy, Jay is starting a new career in the private sector. He lives in Stafford, Virginia, with his family.

U of M celebrates 120 years on April 14th from 5 to 9PM at the chapter house!

I am excited to announce the upcoming event to celebrate the U of M’s 120th founders day on April 14th 2012 at the U of M chapter house at 1601 University Ave SE in Minneapolis!

We will be having a large selection of appetizers and N/A beverages and mixers available to all who attend and ask that you bring any alcoholic beverages you wish to consume in order to comply with Risk Mgt. policies. Some of us plan to bring a special scotch or homebrew to share and encourage you to join us in the sampling as well! Please RSVP to me via facebook, phone or email so we can plan accordingly.

I expect almost 75 alumni and 30 active members to visit the event through the evening.
At 6:30 there will be another opportunity to gather everyone for a memorial ceremony like last year and celebrate the lives of our brothers who have recently passed and then the Alumni Ceremony for any alumni who have not yet participated in this ceremony that recognizes our obligations as a brother of the fraternity following graduation.

Hope to see you there!
